Well, one example is LandRover. They sell big engined 4X4s and promised to plant a load of trees every time you bought one of their vehicles. Where were the trees grown? More often than not in poor countries that wanted to develop rather than have their country covered in trees. Most of the western world was covered in trees at one time. Who are we to tell developing nations that they shouldn't develop but remain in the stone age.

Other schemes like carbon trading allow developed countries in the west to continue to emit more than their fare share of carbon. On the carbon trading exchanges they buy carbon credits from poor countries that are not polluting. The result is that poor countries don't develop because they have sold all their carbon credits and can't build any factories to take their people out of poverty. It's a modern form of slavery.

@James: I understand your concern about offseting. There is still lots of debate about the practice. These offsets however are not the same. By simply participating in a free program, I know that money was donated to support renewable energy projects. I can't afford to buy offsets. Sure I could get my footprint down a little more, but I'm taking cheaper steps to doing so.

Unfortunately the truth is there are people who will never respect our resources. At least the money they spend on purchased offsets will hopefully trickle down to those who need it. Like the laborers building wind and solar components.

I don't quite understand what you mean by "You fly on an aeroplane or buy a big SUV, you subscribe to a carbon offset scheme and somewhere south of the equator, someone has a little less." A little less what? People will always need to fly. There is no denying that. How any of that affects people south of the equator I don't understand.

Sorry to put a downer on your elation but carbon offsetting is a con, a scam and a nasty one at that.

All carbon offsetting does is permit wealthy people in the west to continue living unsustainable lifestyles whilst preventing poor people from elevating themselves out of poverty.

Carbon offsets are a cosmetic way for wealthy people to sweep their guilt under a carpet.
