Paul Brooks, The Pursuit of Wilderness (1971)

I found this quote today. It really takes the way we treat the environment to a strikingly surreal view.

We shall never understand the natural environment until we see it as a living organism. Land can be healthy or sick, fertile or barren, rich or poor, lovingly nurtured or bled white. Our present attitudes and laws governing the ownership and use of land represent an abuse of the concept of private property…. Today you can murder land for private profit. You can leave the corpse for all to see and nobody calls the cops.

That was back in 1971. Scary how little has changed.

On a side note my neighbor and I took a wildlife viewing ride up behind our homes yesterday. We didn’t see much, but we drove though a very large logging site. The entrance was posted with a sign from the logging company. When I got home I looked up their website http://www.mtlforests.com I was happy to learn they are harvesting sustainably. I now know where I’m going when I need FSC lumber to renovate my home.

Great post! It is amazing about the logging companies. We have pine tree farms around me here and they too cut for sustainability. In fact I was amazed at how they were able to do it along with keeping the trees in a straight line. They also, took care of the road as it got pretty torn up due to the logging trucks. Within a week, road was re-done!

What a cool and responsible site you have here. I like it very much.

Thanks Linda, I must admit I wish the trucks would slow down a little when they pass my home (it’s only setback about 6 feet from the road) but I am on pavement so it’s not too bad.

Thanks Noble! It’s still pretty new, but I’ve gotten most of the kinks out.
