When I run the kitchen faucet waiting for hot water to reach the tap, I stick an empty milk bottle under it rather than letting the water run down the drain. I use the water I’ve collected to fill the cat bowl and water my plants.
On the same note, I recently had a discussion with a neighbor about water conservation. His side was that in our rural environment we don’t need to save water because our homes are supplied by wells and water is discharged through septic systems. It took some convincing to make him realize that more and more wells are running dry, and new wells are being drilled much deeper than in the past.
Water conservation is not just for municipal systems. Everyone should try to conserve. This is a case where you are directly affecting your future in addition to others who may get water from the same watershed.

Great advice! Your tip was very helpful. Also good to let people know that just because they have wells doesn’t mean they shouldn’t conserve water. We have a well and we are always trying to be careful of the water we use and not be wasteful.
Thanks TCK,
I think he understood what I was trying to say. Fortunately I don’t even have a well so others can’t waste my water. My water supply comes from a natural spring. It’s more important to conserve water, but nobody else can get their hands on it.
It’s also more important in my situation to avoid chemicals on my property, but thats another topic.
Totally agree with you about chemicals on the property. None of that here on our land either. Thanks for visiting my blog. Great to know you are from Vermont.
Simple, effective and useful! I’m sold.

Thanks Crazy and Zork,
I’m trying to keep the easy tips coming.
I love this simple tip! My neighbor and I were talking the other day about how long it takes to get the hot water going in our homes since our homes are new the water heater is all the way in the garage, in the furthest corner of the house. I will pass along this tip to her.
