Go Greener with your Dishwasher

Ecover Dishwashing PowderI know EasyGreensy has been dormant for a while, but I’m determined to get back up and moving with the tips immediately.

My sudden inspiration is a product that I had to share with everyone because I’m amazed at not only how well it performs, but also because it’s manufactured by a company who’s products are designed to be environmentally friendly in every way possible.

So why am I so excited?

For those of you who don’t know, I recently moved into a house that is over 200 years old, and in good need of some renovation work. I’d love to redo the kitchen and replace all of the appliances, but that’s a project that won’t be tackled for a few years at best. Up until last week I barely used the dishwasher because unless I practically washed the dishes before putting them in the machine, running it wasn’t even worth the effort.

How environmentally friendly can I be if I’m washing dishes twice? The general consensus is using a dishwasher is greener than washing by hand since a machine uses a small amount of water per cycle compared to running water right down a drain, but I was always so scared to open the door and end up finding half of the dishes still dirty.

In comes Ecover Automatic Dishwashing Powder my fiancée picked this stuff up a couple of weeks ago when I had run out of one of the big name brand detergents (one of several I tried). She knows that lately I’ve been leaning toward any “eco” version of a product I can find, so she did good just picking this brand. The best part however is how well this powder works! I’ve now cleaned three loads of dishes. Some of them with dried on food that’s almost too embarrassing to mention, and every single dish has come out spotless. I can even do the dishes without filling the extra open cup and everything is clean.

Another problem with our washer is the heating coil (aka Energy Waster) doesn’t work. But since I switched to Ecover the dishes are mostly dry as soon as the rinse cycle is done. Apparently one of the ingredients they proudly display on the package helps the water sheet right off.

I highly recommend this product to everyone out there using a dishwasher. You owe it to yourself and the environment. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I’ve actually been using this for a little over a week and I’ve noticed a considerable difference as well. Honestly I find that some of the ‘green’ products don’t always work as well as their less environmentally counterparts, but this one is certainly a winner.

Its so awesome when people review green products and then blog about it – probably The Best way to get others started on using them. I personally do not own a dishwasher, but if I did I would certainly use this product. Thanks for sharing! :-)

I just found out about your site from Rich Dansereau’s post. I agree with him; your blog is worth reading. Congratulations on your home. Here in Houston, we have the unfortunate habit of tearing down older structures; however, I love to explore them and maintain them.

Thanks for your review of this product. That is an interesting formulation by allowing water to sheet off well.

We’ve been using this dishwasher detergent in our family for quite some time and we would never switch back to the old popular name brand. I would recommend this product for it’s cleaning power alone.

sounds great, it seems to good to be true, but yes, it is TRUE! i do not use dishawasher since we only have few dishes, but our argument is we do not waste water since i use a tub to collect the running water when washing, and use this water to water our plants. we stopped from using sprinklers several years ago because it just uses a lot of water and does not really water the plants properly. since we started to recycle dishwashing water for watering plants, our water bill was cut down, and it is also nice to know that we saved water for a much better cause, the environment.

I go through a box of dishwasher detergent per year, so it’ll be a while before I’m due for a replacement, but I’ll certainly keep this in mind, thanks! :)

Thanks everyone for your great comments. Sorry I fell behind in replying, but living in the middle of nowhere with satellite internet sometimes means I’m stuck away from the computer for awhile.
