Take Your Green Website to the Next Level

Are you a green blogger? Do you have a website? Well just how green is your website? Many of us think websites are a greener method of communicating our ideas over tradition print media, but websites are still pretty hefty consumers of resources. Besides the materials used to build all of the servers and electronic devices, website hosting is a major consumer of electricity. Any respectable website hosting provider will house their servers in high security, climate controlled facilities adding to the energy needs to keep our sites up and running.

Well HostGator, my long term hosting provider has recently decided to “green up” their act. They have purchased enough renewable energy credits from local wind farms to not only cover the consumption of their data centers, but an additional 30% has been purchased.

Of course there is debate over how well these credit and offset systems work, but the sad truth is it would be extreamly difficult for any company to generate its own electricty. This give us a fair chance to support renewable energy sources, and prove the demand for new renewable facilities.

So how green is your website? If your srever isn’t being powered by wind I highly recomend that you check out HostGator. Their plans are extreamly affordable, and in the many years I’ve been a customer I’ve never had a major support problem. The small issues the

inevitabley come up have been solved quickly by an excellant support staff.

A few weeks ago I mentioned Brighter Planet’s 350 Challenge and the offsets they were offering to bloggers who shared the program by including a badge on their sites. Today EasyGreensy and one of my personal blogs received their certificates.

Free Carbon Offsets For Your Website

If you keep any kind of website or blog, here is a simple way you can help by offsetting your carbon footprint.

CO2Stats monitors the usage of your web site’s server and based on its location, and the locations of your visitors they estimate the carbon footprint and then purchase Renewable Energy Certificates equal to the amount your site uses. The certificates help fund solar and wind electrical generation.

Setting this up on your site is very simple. Just visit CO2Stats, copy a very short script, and include it on your site. That’s all there is to it. You can opt to use a paid version also which will provide some detailed stats, but the free option is great start.

Support Green Programs

When most people hear things like “support us” our first thought is, “Great, another way to spend money I don’t have”. No matter how strong your feelings toward an effort, sometimes there just isn’t enough money to support it.

Well, sometimes you don’t need to spend any money to make a difference. Brighter Planet’s 350 Challenge http://350.brighterplanet.com/ is one of those ways. If you keep a blog you can participate too. All they ask is that you add their badge to your blog, and in exchange they will offset 350 pounds of carbon in your name. If you don’t keep a blog, don’t despair, why not ask your favorite bloggers to take part in your name?
