Big News: France to Spend $2.2 Billion on Electric Car Charging Stations : TreeHugger

Build It And They Will Come
Electric cars and charging stations go together, but there’s a kind of chicken & egg problem; who’s going to build charging stations along highways and public roads if there are no electric cars, and who’s going to buy a electric car if there are no charging stations? The French government seems to have decided that the way to crack this dilemma is to build a network of charging stations using taxpayer money as part of a broader initiative to encourage the development of clean vehicle technology and battery manufacturing in the country.

Thanks to a tweet by PassionateGreen, I just found out about the Environmentalists for Obama group. Although I don’t agree 100% with his ideas about solving issues like global warming (mainly the thought the coal will ever be clean), I do strongly believe he is the best choice available to help move our country toward a greener future.

Each day for the month of October the EPA will be sharing action steps that you can take at home to protect children from environmental health contaminants.

After a quick scan of the list. Most of the topics they address are good general practice for everyone. Food safety, pesticide reduction and mold issues are a few of the daily topics they address.

In order to help keep everyone informed about these useful tips, I’ll be including each tip in my occasional “Links Post”. But feel free to check out the EPA website if you want to sneak ahead.

The 2008 Farm Aid Concert is coming up just around the corner (Sept 20), and if you don’t have tickets you can still enjoy the wonderful music.

Last year’s event on Randall’s Island in New York City was a fun and informative event where in addition to the excellent music, there were many companies and groups presenting their environmentally friendly goods.

Unfortunately this year, the Farm Aid Concert in Mansfield, MA sold out a little quiker than anticipated, so I will be unable to attend. No worries for me and everyone else who wishes they could attend.

Luckily, DIRECTV will be broadcasting the concert live, without commercials, starting at 4pm on its channel The 101 Network. On the 101 you’ll be able to see the concert in high definition with surround sound! Warning: online scammer hypes fake global warming conference

Bloggers be warned. There’s a credit card phishing scam making the rounds on environmental and climate change blogs. It’s appearing in comment sections right now, most likely will extend to email soon.

Thanks to the sharp eye of Inel who has uncovered a pretty sophisticated online scam regarding a conference in London called the 3rd Global Warming and Climate Change International Conference & Exposition (WGGWCC 08).

Don’t Get Overwhelmed

I think one of the most important tips anyone can share when it comes to trying to b environmentally friendly and sustainable is to avoid getting (as Dunja Woods @ Simple Ways To Help calls it) “eco-overwhelm”. It’s very easy to receive so much information that you begin wondering where to start, and what to do next. Before you know it there is so much you want to do that you begin seeing negative affects on your own life because you want to do everything in an eco way.

Dunja wrote a great set of steps to Overcome Feelings of Eco-Overwhelm, but I think the best summary of it all is that you need to focus on individual tasks and don’t be afraid to say no. Unfortunately there are some things that you just can’t do. Maybe its something you’ll be able to do in the future, but don’t feel bad because you can’t do everything green right away. Focus on one aspect of green living at a time and before you know it everything will fall into place.

I found this quote today. It really takes the way we treat the environment to a strikingly surreal view.

That was back in 1971. Scary how little has changed.

On a side note my neighbor and I took a wildlife viewing ride up behind our homes yesterday. We didn’t see much, but we drove though a very large logging site. The entrance was posted with a sign from the logging company. When I got home I looked up their website http://www.mtlforests.com I was happy to learn they are harvesting sustainably. I now know where I’m going when I need FSC lumber to renovate my home.
